Soundscape Project

  1. I think that the best part of your project was the laugh I’m not saying anything was bad. The laugh seemed to have the Pitch changed so that your voice was lower than it already is. I wonder if you intended it as Referential sound the laugh is there we don’t know where it’s coming from, is it just some student off screen laughing at the picture or is it some sinister villain that has tortured all of these people. I vote the second. The Timbre seems pretty Tonal to me I can identify maybe 4 sounds but the way there meshed together it seems almost normal.

  2. Jack I absolutely love the emotion I get from the combination of the song and imagery. I can definitely get the laughter part because that is obvious from the beginning. There are very cool contrasting ideas and sounds in the piece too. The laughter itself is representational of joy. But the laugh with the pitch dropped down and the layering of your tracks and effects you can tell that it is joyless. The violin strings go from loud and up beat to soft and somber. All of the imagery definitely drives the point home that this piece is suppose to be eerie and contrasting. Great job dude.

  3. I think the indifferent laugh which runs through the whole soundscape is your bright point. The laugh can be casual sound, and also can be semantic sound which represent the oppisite of happy here. For Gestalt Principle, the laugh always in the background which gives the audience some illusion. We can also feel proximity in the last part of soundscape, and also explains the directionality that the laugh bring us into certain direction. I also like the tempo in your soundscape becasue it begins very lightly, and then keeps a certain medium tempo, then come down gently.

  4. This is an excellent soundscape Jack. It is definitely easy for viewers to pick up the emotion from the music as well as the sound effect of the deep and almost demonic laugh. The laughter did a really good job of making the sound seem really large in size as far as space is concerned audio wise. The pitch manipulation of the laugh is ingenious and definitely helps to carry the emotion of joylessness. This semantic laughter really added to the overall emotional aspect of the piece. Also, I noticed that there weren’t very many layers used; this isn’t a bad thing. I feel like the shallowness of the space in audio really helped to reinforce the joyless aspect of your emotion. The photo manipulation was also really creative and interesting.

  5. Hey Jack, this is a great soundscape. I loved how you set the tone of your emotion from the very start of your song with that creepy laugh. I could tell the images were well thought out because of all the contrast in them. The different pitch it the violins in the song also gives you this feeling of joyless because it will start off loud and then drops down to a softer sound which gives you this uneasiness. The violins also had this directionality effect as well because when they were loud, they would go through one speaker and then into the other. I also thought the laughter was very semantic as well which pretty much tied it all together.

  6. I really enjoyed your soundscape. I thought you did a great job exploring the size and timbre of the music. The laugh at the beginning was a great way to set the overall feeling of the music. The images were manipulated perfectly to interact with the music. I love the picture of the tree at the beginning of the soundscape and I think the initial string sound was a good choice. I think you guys did a great job exploring depth since you guys used several layers. I liked the height/ pitch of the music as well. Overall you did a great job!

  7. From the start of the soundscape I hear the laughter and then notice the semantic presences of it throughout the presentation. The loudness of the laughter let the audience know something wasn’t quite right. As the slides moved on the change in music really created the proximity of all the images. The music had a faster tempo in contrast with the slower laughter that really pulled it together well. With the overall theme of each slide it created a noticeable sense of similarity. In the end, taking two contrasting emotions, the figure and ground really came through. I thought it was very well done.
